ELA: What led you to want to start your own business?
S: In Brooks there’s no other gyms so it seemed like a great opportunity.

ELA: Why Brooks?
S: My wife is here

ELA: So when did you open your first gym?
S: September 2011

ELA: When did you move into this new beautiful space?
S: Two months ago.
ELA: Wow! It’s only been 2 months and it’s already all set up, clients are coming through the door and you’re hitting your busiest months ever. That’s fantastic!

ELA: So is it just you that works here?
S: Right now it’s just me and my wife helps me with the books, marketing and administration. But I’m looking to hire somebody.

ELA: Is there too much work for you?
S: I would love to get another trainer to help me with the personal training but also to run group classes.

ELA: Group classes?
S: When I was still going to ELA, I visited another studio here in Brooks. All they did was group classes for women. I asked them if I could work there as a personal trainer, and she told me that there is no need for that in Brooks (ha!). She’s out of business now so it’s a great opportunity to take over the group-class market.

ELA: So how did you get to be a personal trainer?
S: I started by cleaning equipment in a gym in Nova Scotia. Then there was an opening and I became a strength trainer. Then, when I was 18 I became an NSCA personal trainer, then I joined the military as a fire fighter, went to ELA and here I am.

ELA: Who’s coming through the doors of your business?
S: Mostly women.

ELA: How do you attract clients to your business?
S: I advertise through facebook a lot. Recently I built up my facebook page by reading a lot about social media marketing. In the fall I’m going to try the local radio stations. I made free programs for 40 people that joined my facebook page and about 10 of them are still training with me. Also, I have clients that have been with me from the start. So over a year now.

ELA: What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?
S: I love being my own boss. I don’t think I could ever work for anyone else again.

ELA: What do you love most about being a trainer?
S: I love seeing people accomplish their goals. For instance, I had a weight loss competition in the spring and the woman that won is still training with me. She’s now lost almost a total of 75 lbs.

ELA: What do you dislike about running your business?
S: I hate doing the books!!

ELA: What do you dislike about being a trainer?
S: I’m not a morning person. My bootcamps are 5:30am so I have to get up at 4:00am and I close at 7:00pm. So it makes for long days.

ELA: So what else is new?
S: I’m having a baby in December so I’ll definitely be needing some help in the studio. Spread the word that I’m hiring.

ELA: Ever have any embarrassing moments as a trainer?
S: I was tired one day, went into one of the change rooms, leaned back on the wall and before I knew it I was asleep. I woke up sometime later to my clients laughing at me and taking photos.

ELA: What do you have to share with somebody wanting to become a trainer?
S: If you like fitness and want to impact others’ lives then this is a great profession.

ELA: What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?
S: Just go for it! Don’t be afraid of failure. Everyone fails in life and if you experience a failure then just keep moving. You never know what awaits up ahead.

ELA: Are you happy with the income you’re earning in your business?
S: Yes. At first I wasn’t making any money but within 6 months of running a business I was generating a profit. My last 2 months have been the busiest ones yet, and summer time is supposed to be quiet for trainers. Looking forward to seeing what September brings.

ELA: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
S: A year ago, within 5 years I was dreaming of something like what I have now. So, it’s kind of crazy that I’m here. Now, my new 5-year goal is that I want to build a facility that will include a chiropractor, physiotherapist and other health professionals all in the same space.

ELA: Where do you go for advice?
S: I subscribe to a magazine called Success, the publisher is Darren Hardy who also wrote The Compound Effect. Both are great reads for entrepreneurs. I find a lot of reading on the internet. I also love Todd Durkin – he’s a personal trainer and gym owner in San Diego and has written numerous books. He’s my idol.
